More About This Great City
The great city of El Reno, OK is filled with history, character and unique charm. It lies within a Canadian County in the central part of the state, only 25 short miles away from downtown Oklahoma City. This metropolitan area is home to 17,268 people and is only around 80 sq. miles in area. Originally, this great city was located five miles north of its present location, right along the banks of the North Canadian River, and it was referred to as "Reno City" at that time. Many people however, would get it mixed up with Reno, NV and the mail system was having trouble differentiating between the two. That is when the people decided to move to the present location and change the name to El Reno, setting them apart.
Located at the interchange of I-40 and U.S. Route 81, El Reno is home to Redlands Community College, the Canadian Valley Technology Center, Fort Reno and a Federal Prison. Fort Reno is a historic location that was built back in 1874 and run by General Philip Sheridan. The Fort was named in the honor of his friend and fellow soldier, Gen. Jesse L. Reno, who lost his life fighting in the Civil War. Back during the time of World War II, Fort Reno was used as a prisoner of war camp, which is why there is a P.O.W. cemetery there to this day. Today, the grounds of the Fort are occupied by a research laboratory used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, dedicated to preserving the North American Great Plains.
El Reno maintains its small town feel and friendly atmosphere and it remains a Main Street community. Every year, the residents hold their annual Fried Onion burger Day Festival where they cook the world's largest fried onion hamburger that weighs 850 pounds in total. People who attend the festival watch as the burger is cooked and assembled and then everyone joins in to eat it. This small town tradition has been going on for more than 20 years now and is still practiced to this day. Home to the El Reno Tribune, this paper is published on both Wednesdays and Sundays and is circulated amongst 5,000 readers.
